Preparing for your first backpacking trip

Preparing for your first backpacking trip doesn’t have to be intimidating. With just some basic gear, you can have a safe, comfortable, and genuinely enjoyable experience—and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune, either.

If you go by what the internet and certain influencers say, you might get the impression that you need all the latest, high-tech, ultralight gear to get started. And yes, some of that gear can be helpful—lighter packs and cozy extras do have their perks. But for a beginner? You really don’t need that much.

I’ve been hiking and backpacking for years, and I’ve tested out all kinds of gear setups. Over time, you figure out what’s worth investing in for you. Maybe that’s an inflatable pillow that makes all the difference in your sleep, or a lightweight pack that’s easier on your back. But honestly, for most people just starting out, those things aren’t essential.

That’s why I always provide a basic, trip-specific gear list tailored to the environment and skill level. And I’m always happy to chat one-on-one to help you figure out exactly what you need—so you can hit the trail feeling prepared, confident, and excited.
